2008 brought a new chapter in the musical relationship between Kiki and Carmelo. They have signed a deal with EMI and for the first time Kiki's albums recorded in the 70's on Elton John's Rocket Records have been re-mastered and released on CD.
The 3 albums that Kiki and Carmelo have recorded together which highlight their special collaboration and adventurous musical direction are also in the shops on EMI records....
''its great to walk into a record shop or go on line and see all our music made available".... says Kiki......and with the help of EMI they are raising their profile with more regular TV and radio appearances...
The duo met in the mid 90's and worked together on a Greatest Hits compilation which led to them hooking up and writing music together and they are still working away on what they call 'our ongoing musical experiment'...
Second half of 2009 will see the duo touring the UK. Live concerts are very important to them and in their unique acoustic guitar based show they bring together their original music with some of Kiki's known songs such as 'Don't Go Breaking My Heart' and 'I've Got The Music In Me' as well as covers of songs by people like Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel to name but a few.....this mix brings the audience to a very intimate and spontaneous evening.....
Born in Bradford Yorkshire Kiki began her singing career with a local Dance Band and in the mid 60's she was invited to London to record her debut solo recordings for Fontana Records, she also worked live in cabaret around the UK and appeared on Radio and TV guest spots such as the Morecambe and Wise Show. At the end of the decade she received a phone call from the Administration side of Tamla Motown records asking her to come to Detroit and do some recordings for them ''At first I thought it was someone having a joke but I did end up spending three months in America and I am still proud of the work I did out there''.
Although turning professional as a teenager success on a larger scale came for Kiki when she signed to Elton Johns label Rocket Records and went on to have hits with songs like Amoureuse and I've Got The Music In Me and in 1976 Don't Go Breaking My Heart with the man himself. Apart from her solo career Kiki has worked for long periods of time on the West End Stage and toured in a show called Pumpboys and Dinettes with Carlene Carter daughter of June and Paul Jones of The Blues Band, and eventually had great success with a Laurence Olivier award nomination for her performance in Willie Russell's Blood Brothers. For the last decade Kiki has been collaborating with Guitarist, writer and Producer Carmelo Luggeri on there own music which is more experimental than ever before,In this semi acoustic setting she has found more expression than ever,''I love the freedom and creativity of this phase in my working life, having a recording studio at my disposal and communicating with live audiences in an intimate setting is a great challenge and very rewarding''. |
