The Blues Bands performance at the Marine Theatre is one of the high spots of the year. Jacky Hedley Tuffs, who has been involved with different aspects of the theatre for all her 11 years in Lyme Regis said “The band is always so popular, even though they play at really large venues, they still come to us because they enjoy the venue so much, and we love having them. They are really nice down to earth chaps, you’d never think they were such big names.” The Blues Band tickets for Friday 11 July have been selling fast ever since they became available at Lyme Tourist Information Centre. Lorraine Knowles, the Manager of Lyme Tourist Information Centre added “People put their names down for tickets even before they are available, and no sooner do we have them here than they go out the door again. The team like the buzz it creates, and we see a lot of the same faces as their firm fans return,. The tickets sell faster than any others once they are on offer.” Call 01297 442138 for tickets at £17.00 in advance and £18.50 if any are left on the door.
For a band to stay together for 25 years takes commitment and belief but most of all requires an audience that keeps coming ‘Back for More’ (as per their 1989 album!). Thousands of gigs and hundreds of thousands attendees cannot be wrong! The Blues Band formed in 1979 to play the music that was their passion just for fun and a bit of beer money, and then found themselves with whole new careers on their hands. They’ve released 17 or so albums and have regularly rung the musical changes. Their extensive canon of recorded material includes a large catalogue of original songs as well as their own readings of songs from the genre’s finest writers like Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Sleepy John Estes etc.
In the past 25 years the band have played all around the world and have wowed festival audiences in many countries including headline appearances at Glastonbury. Whilst not unique in being the only band to have survived together for 25 years they are one of the few outfits to have consistently recorded new material throughout such a long career, and whilst staying true to their blues roots have constantly developed their music & redefined their approach on several occasions. With 4 singers and songwriters in the band the quality and variety of performance and material offered by The Blues Band is pretty much unrivalled and the band’s passion and reverence for the music, their presentation and showmanship all combine to deliver the definitive ‘good night out’. |
