NEW DRAMA AT THE MARINE THEATRE

Wonderful New Playwrights at Marine Theatre

On Thursday 12th June eight emergent playwrights presented their plays to an enormously appreciative audience.

Writing is so often a journey of self – discovery and one of the students wrote,

‘I have learned a lot about myself.  This course really took me out of my comfort zone, which is a good thing.  I would definitely recommend this course.’ Another added, ‘The course has been everything I have wanted.  Lots of excellent creative ideas and a chance to meet lots of new like minded people.  I now feel my writing has taken off.  Thank you.’

Fred Humphries, who often performs with the Lyme Regis dramatic Society in well known plays acted for the writers. He played various roles: from a teenage son to a murderous lover, and said “It was a privilege to read this new material, to be the first to flesh out the characters and I thought it was amazing the way they created mood and atmosphere in just a few lines.”

The course has proved so popular with the 8 students that another is already set up for this autumn, starting on the 7th of October with a special all-day workshop on September 8th 2008.  For more information about the course call the theatre office on 01297 442394.  Brian Woolland is an experienced professional playwright whose plays have been toured across Europe and he won the Arts Council Award for New Writing with his play "Double Tongue".

The theatre is offering more drama in July on Thursday 24th July at 7.30 when the touring theatre company  Mad Dogs and Englishmen are visiting again. They are bringing their romp through history, “Mad and Merry Monarchs”.  Three actors discover the colourful and crazy episodes of history and find out whether Alfred really did burn the cakes or was he having a crafty smoke behind the bike sheds? And how did King John lose the crown jewels in the wash? If you can't name our rulers in the right order, or the difference between William the Conqueror and William Rufus but you don't want a school history lesson, this show is for you; 1000 years of England's history in 100 minutes of music, poetry, songs and silliness.

A brand new show by Ann Courtney, it's ideal for a family audience who are not afraid to join in on occasions! Tickets from the Lyme TIC 01297 442138 at £8.00 adults and £4 for U16s

History will never be the same.
