"If I had to choose between betraying my country and betraying my friend, I hope I should have the guts to betray my country." -- E.M. Forster. This great writer's comments about friendship and loyalty resonate throughout Hugh Whitmore's thought provoking play "Pack of Lies" at the Marine Theatre for one night only, 13 October at 8.00 pm. This is a neglected masterpiece that all drama lovers should see.

Set in a London suburb and based on true events, the play opens as the Jackson family greets their good friends and neighbours, the Krogers. The Jacksons are quickly thrust into the middle of an investigation by the mysterious Stewart, who tells them that the Krogers are Russian spies. Suddenly even innocent actions take on sinister meanings as the family struggles with deception and lies...and choosing between loyalty to their country or to their friends.

As Helene Hanff wrote in "The Duchess of Bloomsbury Street", the couple were friends and neighbours with Peter and Helen Kroger for ten years or so, and one evening invited the Krogers to dinner - Helen arrived wearing a long black evening dress. "Helen, you look like a Russian spy!" said their hostess. They all laughed - but a few months later, the neighbours read in the morning newspaper that they were Russian spies - Morris and Lona Cohen.

This dramatic and touching play is presented by Ubiquitous Touring Theatre Company – who are visiting the Marine Theatre for the first time before their taking the play on a European tour. Tickets are £8.00 from Lyme TIC 01297 442138
