“Rather wonderful music that combines classic soul influences with a distinctly modern production approach”

Cure the Jones

Mamas Gun emerged from lockdown with a highly acclaimed album, “Cure the Jones”.

Rooted in the soul tradition of the 1970s, the album explores a world turned upside down.

Frontman Andy Platts and drummer Chris Boot wrote and produced Cure the Jones. It captures the band’s soulful energy adding a unique freshness to the classic soul sound.

Soul Roots

Soul music has a rich history of commenting on troubled times. Examples include Marvin Gaye, Nina Simone, Sam Cooke and Gil Scott-Heron.

Andy suggests “Soul music is a place where so many musical rivers meet. You have soul, jazz, blues gospel, it’s all running into it. Soul music is more meaningful than just being a language, it’s “life-affirming. It’s not just fun as a musician… With soul music, it’s everything”

Andy admits that Bill Wither’s death, “hit me quite hard because I’ve put him up there as one of the greats. He had this skill of writing songs that seemed so simple in kind of everyday speak, laced with bits of poetry”.

In response Andy wrote ‘Looking For Moses’. This track spurred the band to complete Cure the Jones during lockdown.

Critical acclaim

Their first three albums spawned Top 10 hits on four continents. This included #1 single in Japan, and top 10 airplay positions in UK and parts of Europe.

The band’s debut album, “Routes to Riches,” released in 2009, received critical acclaim. And the follow-up, “The Life and Soul,” cemented their reputation as one of the UK’s most exciting soul bands.

This blend of classic and contemporary influences have sparked millions of streams worldwide. And garnered praise from The Sunday Times, Billboard, The Guardian, and Uncut Magazine.
Mamas Gun has toured across the UK, Europe, the US and Asia. They have appeared alongside Earth, Wind & Fire, Incognito, and Beverley Knight. They have performed at the Billboard Music Awards. And at music festivals such as Love Supreme, Java Jazz, and Seoul Jazz.
